the velvet curtain has been drawn
the house lights are once again
illuminated.
the orchestra plays their interlude
and the audience enjoys the first intermission.

over plastic glasses of grigio and shiraz in the lobby
and cigarettes and cigars just outside the main entrance
can you feel the murmurs.
the silent disgust and disdain
the overwhelming sense
of disappointment.

the nouveau and the blue bloods
the ivy leaguers and the hipsters
the want-to-be's and the never wills
the haves and the have wants.
they all agree that the show is lacking
but continue to support
just to say that they were there.
just in case...

just in case the show is a success
they can say they knew.
they saw it before you
and they always will,
staying one social step
ahead of the crowd.

and so they passively nod
and look up each others noses
whilst looking down their own,
as they pass mirror images of themselves
be it past, present, or future
and head towards their seats
in time for a most certainly dreadful
second act.

the show is about to start

please find your seats...
